| Spectacular sunrise to sunset views of Downtown red-tile roofs, Harbor, Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands is what makes this district of historic homes and parks one of Santa Barbara's gems. Only made easily accessible in the early 20th century by the advent of the automobile, the Riviera is located on the foothills directly north of downtown and east of the historic Mission Santa Barbara.
The Riviera, so named because of its resemblance to its counterpart in the south of France, is composed of homes which dot the hills that surround and overlook the city of Santa Barbara. Many of the streets were named after the padres who came to the Santa Barbara Mission back in the 1800s, giving this neighborhood a touch of its own Spanish heritage. Almost tropical in appearance, the Riviera is home to a very wide variety of plants and trees, some of which are in bloom no matter what time of the year. Hibiscus, eucalyptus, acacias, and other exotic plants cover the hill.
Stone walls and winding streets with magnificent homes and modest but unique cottages, are all enhanced by grand views of red-tiled roofs, blue ocean, and views of the Channel Islands. Francheschi Park offers local residents an opportunity to sit and enjoy the views of city, beach and island. Nearby County Bowl hosts headliner concerts throughout the year. The music from these concerts filters up the hills, allowing local residents the opportunity to either visit the Bowl, or hear portions of the concerts second hand.
Riviera residents have perhaps the best seat in town every fourth of July when the fireworks display takes place over the harbor.
