| Aptly named, Summerland is a quiet, rustic community that is located about 5 miles to the east of Santa Barbara. It is situated on hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and boasts some of the best, most unobstructed views in the area. There are many intimate cafes offering outdoor seating for those wishing to savor a quiet moment.
Founded in 1889 by rancher Harry L. Williams, Summerland attracted a unique population as this man, with an interest in the supernatural, invited others to join him. The Big Yellow House which, like many original buildings in town rumored to have ghosts, was built in 1884 as the Williams personal residence.
An assortment of antique shops and Bed and Breakfasts are located in Summerland. Run by locals, they serve as unique landmarks. Lookout Point, located above the Pacific, is a grassy knoll suitable for picnics. You can also find a playground, volleyball courts, and walkways to the beach.
There is a world class Polo Field nearby, which offers those interested an opportunity to watch a Polo match featuring some of the world's best players.
